Oftentimes, life is ambiguous. It is hard to make the "best decision" or take the next step because the instructions of life are not given to you. You don't have a point of reference for problems like:
What is the best university to go to?
How do I approach the conversation with a loved one about a substance or alcohol abuse?
I am feeling distant from my partner, how do I tell them without hurting them?
I have wronged someone in my life, and I do not know how to make it right.
Taking the next step into the unknown is stressful and prevents many of us from engaging with vulnerability, one step at a time. But that is what we are all looking for: authentic and invested engagement with one another. We all are wanting meaningful connections and rich relationships that make sense.
Not knowing what to do and not doing anything does not help you move forward. Not moving forward keeps you not knowing what to do next. Doing what is next involves doing what you think is next, based on your feelings, values, relationships, needs and wants.
As you understand these factors, you can then take each step, one step at a time. That is what you do: take a step, reevaluate, take another and repeat. Sometimes multiple steps or strides will come because you have a clear sense of what is next. Other times in life, taking the next step takes days or months, and that is ok too. What to do next has less to do with if it is the right next step and more to do with actually taking the next step.
