Couples Therapy in San Diego and California
I help adult survivors of childhood trauma and their relationships, including high conflict couples regain peace in the most heated areas of their relationship. I do this by helping couples apply researched best practices and strategies to cut through the filters and facades that keep problems perpetuated. I am an active, engaged and supportive therapist ready to intervene before problems boil over in sessions.
As a Certified Gottman Therapist, my clinical experience is with military, first responders and healthcare workers and their families to help manage the assumed stress that work for society implies. I have helped couples avoid divorce or separation and process through regrets, betrayals and hidden addictions.
I have trained at a seminary, but I do not impose spiritual or theological views on anyone. I like working with people who want to bring their faith and feelings together. If this not something you want to do, that is completely ok for me as well. I also have expertise for those deconstructing, faith shifting or re-imagining faith after seasons of doubt.
I have a blog with posts to help with depression, suicide, effective journaling, shame, and anxiety.
The best way to meet with me is to either send me s message or Schedule a Free Consult and we can go from there.
I am looking forward to meeting you!

Common Questions:
-
My Master’s degree confirms the training I received to diagnose and treat mental health conditions and relational problems.
My License to practice counseling inside the State of California confirms that I have sufficient experience treating mental health conditions and relationship problems.
I am a Certified Gottman Therapist, which means I have completed Levels 1-3 of Clinical Training, Completed specific courses on Treating Affairs and Trauma and relationships in substance or alcohol recovery. After that I have gone through additional supervision and been approved by Gottman Master Trainers to be an expert in this type of couples therapy.
In order to become a National Certified Counselor (NCC), I have voluntarily meet national standards in education, experience and conduct. To maintain my certification status, I must satisfy National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) requirements, including the completion of continuing education requirements and adherence to ethical standards. You can easily review the ethical standards of National Certified Counselors through the NBCC’s Code of Ethics. NBCC also provides standards for counselors who provide distance professional services. National Certified Counselors must complete quality, verified continuing education in order to maintain their certification, which means staying current with developments and advances in the profession.
As a Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider, I am trained in best practices to offer safe and effective online counseling services.

I earned my BS from Grand Canyon University and MA in Counseling from Phoenix Seminary.
Going to seminary was a personal decision for me because I valued for my own understanding of Psychology to include spiritual connection to be able to help Christians understand their faith with their feelings.
Dont worry- we don’t pray or read Scriptures in session and I am completely comfortable for those in de/reconstruction or faith shifting transitions.
Even though I attended Christian higher education (both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees), it does not mean I counsel from a Christian perspective. I personally have a Christian faith but in counseling, I am more focused on what you believe and what’s important to you.
If you have questions or concerns please let me know!

I am a therapist because I had mental health problems of my own that because of my own therapy have enabled me to have significant life, mood and character change.
I believe that life can get better each day and I love being a crucial support for others.

Outside of therapy I am preparing meals and drinks for those I love. So I would see myself in hospitality and service in some way!

The short answer is no.
If you do see me on your insurance website, it is because I am contracted with Rula Mental Health and hold a small number of insurance-based clients through Rula. If you need to use insurance, I recommend going to rula.com and filling out an intake form. As of September 1, 2024 my insurance Client list is full.
The longer answer is that some Insurance companies consider me an Out of Network Provider (OPN) which has influence on how and if your insurance could pay for or reimburse for your counseling sessions with me.
I cannot guarantee that your sessions will be covered by your insurance. I can provide Superbills for our sessions (you can generate them Monthly in your Secure Client Portal) and it will be up to you and your insurance to your discuss coverage.
It would be helpful for you to contact your mental health insurance coverage (sometimes it is different than your medical insurance coverage) and ask them about my credentials (below) and service codes that I use for counseling sessions (also below).
Grayson Wallen is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (#12135) in California.
Grayson's National Provider Number (NPI) is: 19-62007369
For counseling sessions, Grayson uses the following codes:
Individual Counseling for 45 minutes: 90834
Couples/Relationship Counseling for 90 minutes: 90847 + 99355
ATTENTION COUPLES: It’s important to consider that most health insurance companies do not reimburse for relationship problems or general self improvement and require a mental health diagnosis to justify the medical necessity and your treatment (thus reimbursement for your counseling). So if you hope to get your treatment paid for or reimbursed for, you will often need to be given a mental health diagnosis. I do not assign a diagnosis where there is not one so that you can get treatment paid for or reimbursed.
For those not using insurance, please check out the details I have posted on the Good Faith Estimate and rates for my counseling services.

Great questions to ask your insurance provider if you are hoping to use your coverage for counseling costs:
Does my plan cover counseling services provided by an out-of-network mental health providers?
Who qualifies as an out-of-network mental health provider?
Grayson is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor #12135. Can I use my insurance to reimburse for his session fees?
What is the deductible I have to meet before coverage to an out-of-network provider benefits start?
How much will my plan reimburse me after my deductible has been met?
How many counseling sessions does my plan cover in a year? How many sessions do I have left?
How do I submit the receipt (or Superbill) that I have for my sessions in order to receive reimbursement?
What is the timeline for my claim? How fast/soon after sessions do I need to submit to make sure I get reimbursed?
