What even are men’s issues in counseling? Many of the issues that men struggle with are not unique to men as women can be angry, isolative, workaholics or have problematic relationships too.
Men’s issues can include (but not limited to):
Difficulty feeling or using emotions productively
Difficulty with intimate or meaningful relationships
Substance and/or alcohol abuse
Telling “white” lies or bending the truth
Being overly private
Anger
Affairs (emotional, sexual, partnership)
Being angry about being angry
Excessive worry
Workaholism
Codependence
Fears around being successful or finding failure
Time and expectation management
Not remembering childhood
Rejection
The list can go on since we all have personal twists to life that make lists difficult to outline. But the above reasons are fairly common reasons why men seek out counseling. Men’s counseling focuses on what the individual in counseling hopes to get out of it. At the most basic level, counseling should address the problem experienced in day to day life and is a great place to start. Going to counseling does not have to go back to your childhood, or be a forever relationship. Counseling will address your personal, immediate needs and look into how the problems came to be problems so that you can navigate life accordingly.
